Apprenticeship

Poppypaw and Kestrelpaw were as inseparable as apprentices as they were as kits, constantly getting up to mischief and usually getting into trouble for it. But despite their mischievous personalities, both were turning into fine warriors - Kestrelpaw was an excellent hunter and Poppypaw was a brilliant fighter. They both made many friends, and even more incredible memories. But whilst Poppypaw was focused on her training rather than their usual shenanigans, Kestrelpaw seemed to find himself wrapped around a certain she-cat's paw. She was flirtatious and fun; exactly what Kestrelpaw sought in a partner. The two of them quickly became infatuated with one another, finding excuses to be with each other every waking minute.

With her partner in crime preoccupied, Poppypaw began thinking about romance, and more specifically she began thinking about a particular she-cat herself. Daisypaw. She was intelligent and kind, not to mention witty and funny. Poppypaw was pretty much head over heels in love with her. Having feelings for another cat felt silly to Poppypaw, especially when she should have been thinking about her other priorities instead - like her warrior ceremony being just around the corner. But she couldn't help but think about Daisypaw, about how much her eyes had sparkled in the sun's light or about how soft her fur felt to touch. Poppypaw despised how vulnerable she felt, how completely absorbed she was in Daisypaw. She did her best to suppress her feelings, promising herself she could act on them when the two of them were warriors.

Poppypaw didn't have to wait long, receiving her warrior name only half a moon later - Poppyflame - for her passion and loyalty to Shadowclan. Daisypaw became Daisycry, and Poppyflame was finally ready to tell her how she felt. She told her brother (now Kestrelpounce) first, and he gave her the confidence boost she needed. Poppyflame searched the entire camp, but couldn't find Daisycry anywhere. So, she searched the territory and eventually caught onto her scent near the Thunderclan border. But, she could also smell another cat - one she didn't recognise as a Shadowclan warrior.

As she got closer and closer, she could just make out the faint sound of Daisycry talking with what sounded to be an unfamiliar tom. Poppyflame was confused, and something told her to remain hidden. So she did, but she quickly wished she hadn't. Daisycry was confessing her love! To a Thunderclan  tom!

"Daisycry! How could you?!"

She snapped, jumping out from her hiding spot. Daisycry and the tom wore the same exact shocked expression on their faces, and Poppyflame would have laughed had she not been holding back tears.

"You've betrayed Shadowclan, and for what? This dirty looking tom?! We all loved you, I loved you! But it's clear where your loyalty lies!"

She tried to speak, tried to reason with Poppyflame, but her words fell her deaf ears - Poppyflame was done. She was a traitor to Shadowclan, and she would make sure everyone knew it. She raced back to camp, Daisycry only feet behind her. She should have left with the tom, it would have saved her having to do the walk of shame she was about to do. Poppyflame proclaimed her story to the entirety of Shadowclan, reciting the exact words she had heard Daisycry use. Poppyflame felt no sympathy, no guilt, as her clanmates turned on Daisycry, chanting various insults and suggestive punishments for her actions. She was exiled, right there and then. It was harsh, really, but Poppyflame knew she was going to leave for that wretched tom anyway.

Daisycry cast Poppyflame one last, tearful look before she disappeared in the direction of the Thunderclan border. Poppyflame never saw her again. She was hailed as a true warrior for her honesty, even against her closest friend. But Poppyflame felt nothing but hatred and spite. The love of her life had betrayed her, and it was at that moment the molly gave up on love entirely.
