Kit-hood

"Mama, Papa, look!"

Young Poppykit exclaimed, laughing and giggling to herself as she presented her parents with what she thought to be the most beautiful rock in all existence. Bright green eyes held a wonderful purity only a kit could have, her imagination painting a beautiful image of the world around her. The young she-kit chased after her brother, Kestrelkit, the two of them running circles around their parents as they filled the Shadowclan clearing with the sound of their joy.

"Keep up, Kestrelkit!"

Poppykit raced away from her brother, as fast as her small and unsteady legs could carry her. But their innocent fun came to a sudden end when Kestrelkit tripped over a rock, screaming loudly as he collapsed onto the ground. Poppykit ran over to him, as did her parents and the young she-kit quickly noticed the strange position his small leg was facing - was that normal? It quickly became apparent that it was not normal, and Poppykit could only watch as Kestrelkit was rushed off to the medicine cate's den. She sat outside for what felt like hours, waiting until she would be allowed in to visit her beloved brother.

"This is my fault, isn't it? I shouldn't have been running so fast..."

Poppykit's mother reassured her everything would be fine, but the little she-kit continued to feel awful. She had hurt Kestrelkit, his pain was all her fault; she was a terrible sister. He probably hated her. It wasn't long before she was finally allowed to see him, her small form carefully rushing into the den. Her family were all sat around little Kestrelkit's nest, and Poppykit had to push her way through in order to see him. His leg was covered in strange things that Poppykit didn't recognise, and his scent was intertwined with the odd scents of the medicine cat's den. Her brother was asleep, lulled into a state of painlessness by some sort of strange herbs no doubt. Poppykit carefully settled herself down into the nest, snuggling up against her brother's back.

"I'm sorry, Kestrelkit, I should have protected you from that rock. Don't worry, I won't let anything get you now!"

Kestrelkit had to stay in the medicine cat's den for almost a moon, his leg having been seriously broken and taking a rather long time to heal. Poppykit stayed in there most of the time as well, making sure to keep her brother entertained - she didn't want him to feel lonely after all! The young she-kit became rather acquainted with the strange den and was beginning to get used to the strange scents. She enjoyed watching the Medicine cat work, intrigued by all the different herbs and all their uses. When Kestrelkit was finally back on his paws, Poppykit was strangely sad to say goodbye to the den she'd been staying in the majority of the past moon. She knew she had to make her gratitude to the Medicine cat known, so she left her most prized rock in there as a thank you and as a constant reminder of the praise she would always have for Shadowclan's resident healer.
